German director Doris Dörrie’s homage to Yasujiro Ozu’s masterpiece "Tokyo Story" focuses on a provincial, terminally ill German widower who visits his callow son in Tokyo. Cherry Blossoms is both a tender tale of cultural crossings and a double portrait of grief. At its center is a long-married provincial German couple, each member of which must confront the other’s death, one in prospect, the other in fact.In Rudi’s case, friendship arrives in the person of Yu (Aya Irizuki), a waifish young Japanese woman who practices Butoh, the form of dance that Trudi also loves.
Examining nature through the lens of time. Light sweeps languidly across the tiles in a room. Outside the flowers erupt in a riot of color. Filmed while an artist in residence at Fundación Valparaíso, Mojacar, Spain.
